The Key to Eternal Happiness
I have discovered the secret to a lifetime supply of happiness. No, really I have. Free dopamine 24/7. Comfort, freedom, and constant ecstasy.
M, What could possibly be the answer, you may ask? Friendships. Not just any friendships though. Female friendships. I'm sure that all of us have been through ups and downs with friends, it'd be only human of us to share that experience. But the kind of friendships I'm talking about come from a place of not necessarily permanency, but pure love and companionship. Yes, they may not last forever. I have seen it time and time again. However, there's the thrill of the Now that binds girlfriends together.
If you're a boy reading this, you're probably envisioning girls going shopping, Starbucks, and gossiping, but there's so much more. It's that feeling of hours of work on your hair getting ruined by an all-windows-down-radio-full-volume interstate trip. It's the feeling of sleeping in your best friend's over sized t-shirt on a spontaneous sleepover, or her cool older sister complimenting your outfit. It's the support from your gals that will always come with any wrong move and the constant comfort of having them around. I've come to realize that personally, my greatest friendships are the ones in which we don't have to talk every single day to still be best friends. What is a good friendship without both parties having their own interesting lives, anyway?
I feel that it's only right to quote Taylor Swift. "I wanna be defined by the things I love. Not the things I hate. Not the things I'm afraid of. Or the things that haunt me in the middle of the night. I just think that you are what you love." This is the ending of a song called Daylight. It's about stepping into the life and things you love and letting go of the darkness that was before. I could write an entire essay about this song alone, but I'll spare you that. It may be a love song, but I feel it can be related to friends. That golden light that seems to shine in those special moments of pure joy, and the feeling of finally reaching who you were meant to be for a moment is fully encapsulated in this song. I highly recommend giving it a listen if you haven't already.
It is important to choose wisely who you want to share those moments with, and not expect an eternity of having them with the same people always. Its okay to let yourself grow. Nevertheless, never under value what you have right in front of you. It sounds like a confusing and blurry line of who to keep and lose with time, but in reality its not your choice to make. To My ever extensive 16 year old Knowledge, life will do all the work for you. Time and Situations will wriggle their ways between you and a pal, and maybe even bring you back together when the time is right. I believe in the movement of the sunshiney joy between decades and faces.
The best thing to do is to just let life happen. In the meantime, go out on a Friday night and drive around scream songs out the window. Laugh at the way both of you look in a sheet mask. Live the life you currently own and wait until a new one slowly becomes purchased for you.
